Cantata Singers will present the complete version of George Frideric Handel’s beloved 1783 oratorio, Israel in Egypt. Often performed with only the second and third movements, Cantata Singers restores the deeply personal music of Part 1 to this audience favorite. One of Handel’s most revered works, Israel in Egypt is a masterful recounting of the deliverance of the Israelites from bondage. With its uncommonly varied and thrilling choral and orchestral music, Israel in Egypt shows some of Handel’s most powerful and inventive writing for vocal ensemble.
There will be two performances of this beloved oratorio, the first in beautifully restored Cary Hall in Lexington, and the second in NEC’s Jordan Hall.
Dr. Ellen Harris, Professor of Music at MIT, will give a pre-concert talk, free to all ticketholders, at both performances, at 7pm at Cary Hall in Lexington and 1pm in Williams Hall at Jordan Hall.
Following the performances, all are welcome at a free post-concert reception.
