Chiune Sugihara Commemoration

November 1, 2015 Brookline

Choral music by Koleinu (Boston’s Jewish Community Chorus) and Chorus Boston (Japanese musical Chorus) leads off the event which commemorates the ethics and actions of Japanese Diplomat Chiune Sugihara who wrote over 2000 travel visas in 1940 in Lithuania – against the instructions of his government, setting the standard for righteous diplomats. Appreciation for the details of his actions and ethics will be addressed through video excerpts of PBS video “Conspiracy of Kindness” introduced by Melanie Wallace, Senior Series Producer WGBH NOVA. Rabbi Reuven Cohn will tell of his unique experience growing up as the son of Sugihara survivors. Consul General of Japan in Boston, Hon. Tsutomu Himeno will speak on his personal experiences understanding Chiune Sugihara. The Israel Consulate in Boston will be represented by Deputy Consul General Hon. Matan Zamir in this event created under the auspices of the two consulates. Rounding out the afternoon will be a Senbazuru – 1000 Origami Cranes – display created by students at the Showa Boston Institute for Language and Culture. The Showa students will be available to teach origami to children and adults. Light refreshments will be served as guests are invited to visit the memorial stones at Temple Emeth that honor Chiune Sugihara as well as the history of Temple Emeth families in the Holocaust.
