Tzedek Salons bring young Jews in our 20/30s together with organizers, policy makers and thinkers for casual conversations to explore cutting-edge issues facing our society and state today.
This month, we will sit down with Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Gemmill to learn about the impact that domestic violence has on our communities and the importance of recognizing domestic violence as part of the legal system.
This year, the #MeToo movement has highlighted the pervasiveness of gender-based violence and has raised questions about what resources we have to support survivors and end this violence.
Caitlin will talk about how to recognize the signs of DV and risk factors for DV, as well as important considerations when working with clients who are or may become victims of domestic violence. For instance, DV affects probate court interactions, child interactions (such as custody issues that may arise with restraining orders), safety planning and financial planning. Caitlin will also discuss key DV statutes in Massachusetts and how those laws work to protect DV victims.
Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Gemmill is a member of the Cambridge Superior Court Trial Team at the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, where she prosecutes major felony cases and serves as the MDAO’s Superior Court liaison for two community-based high-risk domestic violence prevention teams. In her work as a prosecutor, Caitlin directly encounters the severe impact that domestic violence has on the lives of people in our communities on a constant basis. Her goal is to prevent domestic violence and to hold its perpetrators accountable. Prior to joining the Cambridge Superior Court Trial Team, Caitlin was the supervising ADA at the Malden District Court and a founding member of the Malden High Risk Team. Caitlin also prosecuted cases out of the Waltham District and Juvenile Courts, as well as the Somerville District Court. Caitlin received her J.D. cum laude from Boston University School of Law.
