From colonial Newport, Rhode Island, to 2021 Jerusalem, Judah Touro will be remembered forever for the many gifts he left in his final will, including the founding of Mishkenot Sha’ananim, the first Jewish settlement outside Jerusalem’s Old City walls in 1860.

This special virtual program for Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) will introduce the people, places and events that would shape the extraordinary life of Touro, a son of a chazzan during the American Revolution.

From Newport to Boston, surrounded by many of America’s founding fathers and families, to antebellum New Orleans, Touro’s extraordinary life was shaped by his Jewish faith, family and freedom. He kept his faith throughout his life and left a legacy through his gifts to many Jewish institutions across early America and Jerusalem.

Moderated by Laura Freedman Pedrick, board chair of Touro Synagogue Foundation, with keynote speaker Keith Stokes, vice president of 1696 Heritage Group.

Musical performance by Jerusalem native Moshe Elmakias from New England Conservatory.

Special guests:

  • Ambassador Meron Reuben, consul general of Israel to New England
  • Rabbi Marc Mandel of Newport’s historic Touro Synagogue
  • Avi Nevel, president and CEO of Rhode Island-Israel Collaborative

Co-hosted by the Touro Synagogue in Newport, R.I., Rhode Island-Israel Collaborative and the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island.
