Israel just held its first national election in four years, and there is no clear winner yet. Voters turned out in record high numbers in an election widely viewed as a referendum on the Netanyahu government. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party will remain the largest single party in the Knesset, neither the Netanyahu bloc nor the opposition bloc won a majority of seats. Over the next few weeks, negotiations will play out to determine if either bloc can successfully form a government. At the same time, with U.S. midterm elections happening on November 3, the results of both the U.S. and Israeli elections could have major ramifications for the U.S.-Israel relationship. Given the polarization and shift in American public opinion toward Israel, the U.S. midterm results may reveal new insights about the foreign policy priorities of American voters.
On November 5, join the Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings for a webinar discussion to analyze the results from both the Israeli national election and the U.S. midterm elections. Panelists will discuss how the Israeli election results may impact the Trump administration’s approach to Israel, what early findings from the U.S. midterm results reveal about American public opinion on Israel and Palestine, and what both of these elections mean for future Democratic and Republican party platforms toward Israel.
