Does your child want to feel like a journalist and a publisher and win the prize? Shaloh House has a solution!

Shaloh House is proud to announce an after-school Journalism and Jewish Values Workshop for students ages 7-14. Classes are open to the community.

At the end of the school year, students will walk away with a published Jewish cookbook with their articles and photos and newfound knowledge of how to be a robust and exciting writer. The cookbook will contain recipes the older generation will share with children through one-on-one interviews. The workshop includes journalism sessions, sessions on Jewish values connected to kindness, love, and compassion for older people and honoring their wisdom, and cooking sessions.

The project will foster children’s interest in the stories of the lives behind the recipes and respect for the older generation.

On top of that, Shaloh House will choose the best article, and a winner will get up to 50% off the cost of Jewish summer camp from a selected list of camps, with a maximum award of $5,000.

Leaders:

  • Sara Rodkin, BA in Psychology & MA in Education, will lead the “Jewish Values: Respect and Honor Elderly.”
  • Maria Shandalov, MA in Journalism, will lead “The School for Young Journalists.”

The workshop is heavily subsidized and is offered at the discounted price of $200 for 20 sessions, Oct. 17, 2023, to May 14, 2024, on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. for ages 7-11 and 5-6 p.m. for ages 12-14.
