Willow trees have held deep significance for Jews across time and space: imagery of resting our violins upon them to carry our grief from exile; rituals of thrusting their branches onto the earth in calls for redemption and rainfall; growth hormones and analogies of diaspora, regrowth and resilience; a Yiddish song about divination.

In this workshop, we will explore some of these uses and meanings, with a special focus on the willow’s ritualistic roles and symbolisms during the holiday of Sukkot, as well as in several Yiddish poems and texts. It is our hope that in these times of collective rupture and profound brokenness, the medicine and magic of willow can help serve as a regenerative and restorative salve.
