The oyven reclaims the Jewish spirit of the communal oven as a platform for food, art and ideas where everyone is fed, physically, spiritually and emotionally. Join us in beautiful North Adams for a retreat hosted by Floating Tower!

The retreat includes:

  • Accommodations at Floating Tower
  • All meals prepared with our wood-fired oyven
  • Shabbat musical programming created by Mátti Kovler
  • Musical programming curated by Chanan Ben Simone
  • Fire pit
  • Pizza parties
  • Interactive cultural and culinary activities

The oyven (Yiddish for “oven”) reclaims the Jewish spirit of a communal oven. For centuries in villages from Poland to Morocco, communal ovens served as gathering points for a social exchange, where recipes and stories were swapped and cooperation strengthened. We join people together in the experience of shaping, baking and sharing challah and other traditional foods while engaging in Jewish creativity, texts and dialogue.

We are conducting a summer tour where we will visit communities and make and break bread with them as a way to test out this idea while making new connections and building community.

We will engage retreat participants through live music events and workshops, pizza-making and other related activities. The retreat will include music, hands-on Jewish programming exploring the world of international Jewish food and culture, a Shabbaton atmosphere with singing and meals and, of course, many opportunities to cook and share delicious, homemade food together using the oyven—our mobile, wood-fired pizza oven.

The goals of the event are to bring participants to an outdoor, natural setting so they can bond with one another through experiential oyven programming. Through doing this, we hope to live out the oyven model of kitchen-centric, cultural Judaism. We hope that the Jewish history of communal ovens as well as the innovative reality of the Jewish programming of our present-day oyven will inspire participants Jewishly and make them feel more connected to our heritage of culture, food, music and community, and to each other.
