Join Rabbi Lewis Mintz in a guided journey through the history, geography, richness, and emotional expressiveness of the language of European Jewry. Using many examples from Yiddish vocabulary, selections from the “Gedoylim” (giants) of Yiddish literature – Peretz, Sholem Aleichem, Mendeleh, Isaac Bashevis Singer – we will explore the vitality and creativeness of that now lost world.
We will explore a Ta’m (a taste, a flavor) of Yiddish music, poetry and the flowering of Yiddish Theater in Europe, the U.S. and South America during the first half of the 20th century and its revival in recent years.
We will look at the examples of how Yiddish vocabulary, tone of voice and accent, even in English, has become a part of American theater, film and television. We will include numerous examples of Yiddish expression as used to lovingly wish others well or heap upon the most terrible (though quite philosophical) of curses.
This eight-session class will take place on Wednesdays from 7:30pm – 9:00pm through April 19.+ More... - Less...
