Yom Ha-Shoah Service-Haverhill, MA

A special liturgy will be conducted at Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill that includes lighting of candles, recitation of modern poems, a special prayer, “El Malei Rahamim (God, full of mercy, dwelling on high), and music of the Holocaust by the Temple Makheila (choir) under the direction of cantorial soloist, Mindy Harris.
The observance begins at 7 pm Friday, May 2nd and will also include special participation by students in grades 4-12.  In addition, members of the Haverhill Clergy  Association will participate by reading selections written during or about the Holocaust.
As part of the evening, a new project and awards were begin, The 2014 Gavriel Levi Awards – Yom HaShoah Essay and Art challenge, by Larry and Sherry Cann, members of the congregation, to further Holocaust education in the Religious School.  Awards for submissions will be announced and all of the pieces that were entered will be on display at the Oneg Shabbat in the Winer Auditorium. 
The Temple community-wide Yom Ha-Shoah service began 18 years ago when Christians in the community asked for a way to memorialized the 6 milliion Jews murdered during the Holocaust.
