TAHARA: The Truest Act of Kindness
חסד של אמת (hesed shel emet)
You are not alone. In times of loss, Jewish tradition offers rituals and customs to help guide and comfort mourners. Rooted in ancient wisdom and practiced for centuries, these traditions belong to Jews of all backgrounds, religious and secular alike.
Jewish customs surrounding death are grounded in two core principles: respect for the deceased and comfort for the bereaved. Between death and burial, Jewish tradition teaches that the person who has died should be treated with the utmost dignity and care through a series of simple, meaningful rituals.
One of these rituals, tahara, includes ritual washing, dressing the deceased in white garments, and placing them in a simple pine casket. Trained volunteers from the Community Hevra Kadisha of Greater Boston perform tahara with tenderness and respect.
Brezniak Funeral Directors can arrange for a tahara through the Community Hevra Kadisha. Contact them at 617-969-0800.
