The stage at Camp Harbor View was full all of Wednesday morning and afternoon, and not just because the performing band brought nine members! Campers crowded on stage to dance and listen to the music of Black Sea Salsa, this week’s performers in the summer long Explore World Arts series presented by the New Center for Arts and Culture, currently in its fifth week. (For more information on the program, please see the New Center’s previous blog post here.)

With nine musicians and as many different instruments, Black Sea Salsa was able to produce a huge variety of sounds and musical styles. “I hope you’re ready to dance!” said group leader Dan Teager to the audience, and they certainly did! Not content with just playing salsa, the band opened with a few sambas and continued into bombas and blues, while the campers danced on the stage and the grass near their seats. For an encore, the group played ‘Stand by Me’ while campers and counselors sang along and rushed the stage. Afterwards campers went on stage to try the piano and bongos, talk about their own music training, and get a few tips on creating their own music. A FANTASTIC time was had by all!
