Sweet! Sufganiyot is popping up on menus around town for Hanukkah, from classic versions to experimental spins. Here are our favorites. As always, check in advance to confirm ordering deadlines and dietary specs.
Bakey
Israeli-owned bakery Bakey, known for sumptuous babka at various Boston-area locales, also sells kosher chocolate hazelnut and strawberry sufganiyot for the holiday. Hosting a group? Grab an intricately rolled centerpiece challah while you’re there. There are locations in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Newton.
Blackbird Doughnuts
Blackbird Doughnuts (not kosher), also with locations throughout the Boston area, sells assorted jam six-packs (fig, mixed berry and peach) in their shops alongside a signature Star of David variety available for preorder before Hanukkah and on shelves throughout the holiday. They also sell Hanukkah-themed lollipops in latke and sufganiyot flavors, decorated with gelt, and ship nationwide.
Kane’s Donuts
Every year, Kane’s Donuts, with locations in Boston and Saugus, offers sufganiyot (not kosher) for preorder by the dozen, through the new year. They come with black raspberry jam, a sprinkle of powdered sugar and a raspberry dollop on top. Order batches online for $25 or visit the micro-chain in person for singles.
Maccabee Bar
Beloved seasonal pop-up Maccabee Bar at Harvard Square’s Noir Bar spins into town through Dec. 31. In addition to Hanukkah-themed sufganiyot cocktails, they’ll serve bar snacks and typically serve a rotating sufganiyot of the day—blueberry, peach, strawberry and more (not kosher).
The Butcherie
The Butcherie in Brookline offers maximum sufganiyot variety, with many kosher flavors: jelly, chocolate-dipped, raspberry and Boston cream. Or buy their frozen dough and try to create the magic at home.
Union Square Donuts
Union Square Donuts, with locations throughout the Boston area, sells seasonal sufganiyot (not kosher) in an array of fun flavors: strawberry jelly, Nutella, rugelach, halva honey pistachio, banoffee pie. All preorders are available for pickup and delivery on Dec. 14-15 and Dec. 19-20.
