Adult Learning Class with Dr. David Ariel: The History of Zionism and Israel, 1882-1948

The course covers the history of Zionism and Israel from the emergence of modern Zionism in 1882 until 1948. Topics include the origins and different visions of Zionism, Jewish immigration, the growth of Arab nationalism, the period of the British Mandate for Palestine, the civil war, the War of Independence, the founding of the State of Israel, the Palestinian refugees, and the Altalena Affair.

Although the course is meant to be a unified experience, each session is “free standing,” so missing one or two is OK.

About Vilna Shul:
The Vilna Shul is the last immigrant era synagogue building that exists in downtown Boston. Located in historic Beacon Hill, the Vilna currently operates as a cultural center and museum celebrating Jewish culture and its intersection with other cultures.

Parking:
Vilna Shul offers $5 validated parking after 4pm and on weekends. Parking validation is only good for the underground parking at the Charles River Plaza/ Cambridge Street Garage at 165 Cambridge Street. Entrance to the underground garage is between the Charles River Plaza Shopping Center (Whole Foods/CVS) and Au Bon Pain, near the intersection of Blossom St and Cambridge St. Yellow tickets from the surface lot at Whole Foods cannot be validated.
