“King David Playing the Harp” by Gerard van Honthorst

Cantata Singers‘ season concludes with Arthur Honegger’s “King David,” paired with music by Yehudi Wyner and his late father, Lazar Weiner. “King David” is a colorful mini-oratorio, fusing styles from ancient music, Baroque music, and jazz. Cantata Singers will present the piece in the original French.

The program will also include “The Torah Service” by Yehudi Wyner for chorus, cantor, and brass ensemble, and songs and choral music by Yehudi’s father, Lazar Weiner. Weiner (1897-1982) was a gifted composer of Yiddish art song, contemporary synagogue music, and cantatas, and the longtime music director at Central Synagogue in New York City.

In lieu of a pre-concert talk, a Shabbat dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Huntington Avenue YMCA at 316 Huntington Ave. to contextualize the evening’s program. Please note registration is required to attend the Shabbat dinner, and is available online here or by calling 617.868.5885.

Following the performance, all are welcome at a free post-concert reception.

This program is supported in part by a Young Adult Innovation Grant from Combined Jewish Philanthropies.
