Join Kerem Shalom member Marty Plotkin as we celebrate Shabbat! This week’s Torah portion, Vayeshev, begins the complicated, dramatic story of Joseph. The youngest child of Jacob—a.k.a. Israel—Joseph is revered as one of the patriarchs. But in this story…well, frankly, nobody looks entirely good. The sages struggled with this text, so it’s no surprise that we do, too.
It’s a good moment to recall that “Israel” means literally “he wrestles with God.” There is nothing more Jewish than to struggle with our tradition. Join us this Friday evening as we welcome Shabbat with song, prayer, and community, and perhaps a bit of God-wrestling.
The service will be held both in person and online.+ More... - Less...
