Beyond lifting the spirits of teachers and students, play in Jewish education spaces can also shape moral development and character. Drawing from his new research, Judd Kruger Levingston will share how teachers and administrators can cultivate “a moral ecology of play” in classrooms, hallways, gathering spaces, and playgrounds. In this session, Levingston will speak about ways in which a wide variety of approaches to play across the curriculum and throughout a school’s culture can transform a young person’s values and moral outlook.

Rabbi Judd Kruger Levingston, Ph.D., is a graduate of Harvard College and of the Jewish Theological Seminary. He serves as Director of Jewish Studies and as Advisor to the Derech Eretz Honor Council at Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in the Philadelphia area, and has served as a teacher and administrator in a variety of faith-based and non-sectarian schools. He is the author of “Sowing the Seeds of Character: The Moral Education of Adolescents in Public and Private Schools” and recipient of the 2019-2020 Sylvia and Moshe Ettenberg Research Grant from the Network for Research in Jewish Education, which supported the field research for this book.
