This course will give participants an overview of the eight Jewish individuals who served as justices of the United States Supreme Court. We will examine their views on various legal issues, the political circumstances under which they were nominated and approved and the degree of influence each has had in shaping the court.
We will have three sessions and look at the justices in chronological order. The first session will include discussions of Justices Brandeis, Cardozo and Frankfurter. The second session will examine Justices Goldberg and Fortas and the nearly 25-year loss of the so-called “Jewish seat.” The last session will look at the modern era and review the three currently sitting Jewish justices: Justices Ginsburg, Breyer and Kagan. An overarching theme will be, “Does it matter if Jews sit on the Supreme Court? Why or why not?”
