In 1996 astronaut Dr. Jeff Hoffman brought a small Torah scroll with him on space shuttle Colombia. On Shabbat, while orbiting Earth, he read from the book of Genesis, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

This was the first time a Torah was brought into space, and in a video recording from that flight, Jeff explained the significance of this event: “Space didn’t make the Torah special…rather the Torah made space special, bringing humanity into space.”

Please join us as Rachel Raz describes this amazing event and shows highlights of the documentary she and others are working on about this momentous occasion.

We will also hear from Janna Kaplan, who will speak on her personal journey and experiences as a Jewish refugee coming to America from the former Soviet Union, as well as her involvement with the emerging commercial spaceflight industry.

Together we will examine what we can learn about space exploration and how it relates to our identity. This is also a story of humanity, voyages and journeys in time and space.
