“Maimonides: Speaking to Us Across the Ages” Winter/Spring 2016 with Rabbi Reuven Z. Cohn, J.D.
Who is Moses Maimonides? Does this scholar born some 880 years ago in Muslim Spain matter to us today? The title of a recent book by a leading scholar calls Maimonides ‘one of civilization’s greatest minds.’ Another leading scholar asks us to ponder how the Jewish world today would be different if Maimonides had never lived.
Closer to home, many of us may well have a copy of A Maimonides Reader sitting quietly on a bookshelf. In this course, our goal is to become so thoroughly acquainted with Maimonides’ thinking that we will break the binding on this outstanding anthology.
As we search together for meaning and insight, we will find Maimonides to be starkly modern at times, and highly traditional at other times. At the end of the course, we will be better acquainted with this renowned, creative, profound and complex individual.
