A fourth-generation cantor, blessed with an extraordinary operatic tenor, invokes the transcendent power of music to uplift souls across two continents amid world war, religious persecution and personal heartbreak.

My Grandfather’s Prayers” is a theatrical production based on the life of Cantor Izso Glickstein (1890-1947), a Jewish Ukrainian prodigy who settles in Boston, where his powerful golden voice expresses the passion and determination of a people holding onto faith and tradition through the violent diaspora of the 20th century. Izso’s remarkable story is told from the point of view of his granddaughter, Lisa Sturz, a professional puppeteer exploring her own Jewish ancestry, artistry, spirituality and responsibility. Lisa uses shadow puppets, scrolling backgrounds, mixed-media film sequences and poetic text to accompany this rich musical journey. To watch the promo video, click here.

For adults and teens. Not recommended for children under 10 years old.

Each performance will be followed by conversation with the artist and a reception with FREE refreshments, sponsored by Bluma Glickstein Stein and the Stein Calm family.

This production is presented as part of Puppet Showplace Theater’s “Puppets at Night” series for adults and teens, in collaboration with Congregation Mishkan Tefila and Jewish Arts Collaborative.
