Starting Sunday, Jan. 29, we begin the tractate of Nazir (“The Nazirite”), which is the fourth tractate in Seder Nashim (“Order of Women,” which addresses family law). A person becomes a Nazir (man or woman) by taking a special kind of vow (this may explain its placement following Nedarim). When taking a Nazirite vow, a person accepts upon themselves a set of specific obligations enumerated in the Torah (see Numbers, Chapter 6). The Torah tells us that “all the days of the Nazirite’s vow, the Nazirite is sacred to the Lord.” So taking the vow of the Nazirite is a “pretty big deal.”

We will discuss the details of the Nazirite vow, the language by which can be made, the oral tradition that expands upon the Torah’s presentation, the elucidation of the activities prohibited to a Nazirite, and, as the Talmud often does, related rabbinic narratives that augment and deepen the experience of its study.
