Since the launch of the Moishe House Ukraine Emergency Relief Fund, we have seen our community leaders spring into action to assist their fellow citizens in need. We will hear from two Moishe House community builders in Dnipro, Ukraine: Moishe House Dnipro alumna Alina (May 2017 to November 2020) and current Moishe House Dnipro resident Dasha.

Alina is using Moishe House Ukraine Emergency Fund support to strengthen Dnipro’s cultural organization Kust in creating one of the city’s largest relief facilities, Shelter Kust, since the war began. The space provides shelter, clothing, food and psychological and legal assistance to displaced Ukrainians. The relief effort is led by local volunteers from the community, with four locations throughout Dnipro. Shelter Kust provides approximately 500 meals and accommodates close to 800 people daily. To date, Kust has processed 270 applications for humanitarian assistance and is staffed with barbers, cooks, waiters, administrators, call center operators, art therapists and more. Prior to the war, neither Alina nor her colleagues had done this type of work. Alina serves as a settlement administrator at three locations and personally provides lodging and other support for refugees.

Dasha will share how she and her roommates have continued to deliver meaningful experiences to their community. The housemates have hosted displaced Ukrainians at their home and have continuously hosted virtual programming, including an online Purim celebration last week that drew over 20 participants.
