In the face of so much pain and fear, and the heartbreak and devastation of these recent weeks, so many of us simply don’t know what to do. As part of my own spiritual practice, when I don’t know what to say or do, I turn to the words of Torah and the wisdom of the ancients. This Friday night, we too will take the opportunity to study some words of Torah together.
It is often said that the Shema is Judaism’s most well-known, fundamental, and foundational prayer. Many, however, may not be aware that the words of the Shema are taken directly from the Torah and consist of three full distinct paragraphs of text. (We have only two of these paragraphs printed in our Siddur, for example.)
We will take the opportunity to study these words and to consider how they may influence our thoughts and feelings about what we may actually be able to do in the days and weeks ahead. I look forward to this opportunity to be together in community and to study Torah together.
