In 2015, singer, songwriter and storyteller Avi Wisnia returned to Poland with his grandfather, cantor and Holocaust survivor David S. Wisnia. Together, they visited the city of Warsaw where David grew up, performed music and led services for a new generation of Jews in Poland, and revisited the infamous death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau where David Wisnia was a prisoner for nearly three years. The trip, as documented by Avi Wisnia in his #MyPolishWisnia blog, helped bring new attention to David’s story of tragedy and survival, as presented in his memoir, “One Voice Two Lives,” and a short-form video produced by BuzzFeed.

Through story and song, Avi Wisnia recounts his travels with his grandfather and the profound journey of tracing his grandfather’s footsteps from child singing prodigy to Auschwitz survivor to American soldier. With a broad-ranging repertoire including Yiddish show tunes, Jewish folk music, liturgy and contemporary jazz, Avi connects his family’s Jewish musical past to the present, finding new meaning in Jewish tradition and keeping alive the stories and songs of the Holocaust to be carried forward from generation to generation.
