The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is holding a virtual discussion on Facebook to mark five years since the infamous Unite the Right rally by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 11, 2017. Held to protest the removal of confederate statues, the rally was marked by racist and antisemitic slogans, as well as threats of violence. The next day, counter-protester Heather Heyer was killed, with others injured. Since then, self-identified neo-Nazis have recruited new members through conspiracy theories related to beliefs about white power and replacement. The discussion will include the history of such beliefs.
The participants will be Dr. Edna Friedberg, a historian at the USHMM, and David E. Mills, a partner at Cooley LLP, who represented plaintiffs described as “victims of a racially motivated conspiracy to commit intimidation and violence.” Dr. Rebecca Erbelding, a historian at the USHMM, will moderate the discussion.
