This class will focus on three questions:

  • How did Zionism create Israel in 1948?
  • What were the various strands of Zionism, e.g. religious, secular, socialist, political, etc?
  • What have been the successes and failures of Zionism?

Rabbi David Starr is a scholar and the rabbi of Congregation Mishkan Tefila. He received his Ph.D. in history and Jewish studies at Columbia, and his rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He has taught various courses in American Jewish history for students from high school to university (Hebrew College and Brandeis University), pre-service rabbinical students (Hebrew College) and adults (the Me’ah Program, which he founded). He has published numerous articles on American history, on Jewish history, and on American Jewish life. He is currently writing a biography of Solomon Schechter, a noted scholar, writer, and institutional leader.
