Jewish identity, both individual and collective, is hard to define. Across the centuries and around the globe, there have been a vast variety of Jewish cultures and practices. Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, is credited with formulating the concept of “Jewish peoplehood,” but does this notion hold any meaning for us today? Are we a “community of faith”? A “nation”? Something else entirely?
Together we will explore some possible metaphors for understanding Jewish identity and community, and share our own experiences of being part of “the Jewish people.”
