Adult Learning: “Tough Questions in Reform Responsa” – begins March 2, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What sources do we look to when thinking about how to make key decisions in our lives? To whom do we turn for guidance? Do we turn to ourselves, to our community, to our rabbis, to halacha (normative Jewish law)? In this course, we are going to delve deep into several Reform responsa in which we see the rabbis weighing various moral, ethical, and Jewish values in trying to suggest the best path. Specific questions include topics in adoption, conversion, marriage, and death. The focus of this five session course will not be getting to the “bottom-line halacha” but rather exploring how we make decisions in our lives, to whom we grant authority, and what happens when our different value systems seem to clash with one another. The course, taught by Avi Trausberg,  begins on Sunday March 2 and continues on March 9, 16, 23 and 30. Avi is Temple Sinai’s rabbinic intern from January-June 2014. The class is part of Temple Sinai’s continuing “Back to the Sources” series of Adult Learning programs and registration is required. The fee is $30 for non-members. Please contact the Temple office to register.
