Annual Leo Trepp Lecture and Torah Scroll Dedication

March 15, 2016 Boston

The third annual Trepp Lecture will be given by Rabbi David Ellenson, Director of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University, and will be preceded by the dedication of the Trepp Torah scroll, which Mrs. Gunda Trepp has generously donated to be permanently housed at the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies. Professor Ellenson, a past president of Hebrew Union College and historian of German-Jewish Neo-Orthodoxy, will speak on “How Germany Produced Modern Judaism – Lessons for Today.” Reviewing the emergence of Reform, Orthodox and Positive Historical (Conservative) varieties of Judaism in 19th century Germany, Rabbi Ellenson will consider the nature and character of these movements, and explain the ongoing relevance of their beliefs and structures for an understanding of Judaism today.
