The Wiener Holocaust Library in London is holding a virtual screening of the documentary film “Complicit,” about the fate of the refugee ship MS St. Louis in 1939, as well as a panel and talk featuring former child refugees aboard the vessel and the film’s creator and director, Robert Krakow.
Months before the start of World War II, the German luxury liner MS St. Louis journeyed from Hamburg to Havana, Cuba, with 937 passengers, the majority of whom were Jews fleeing the Nazis. After successively being frustrated by Cuban, American and Canadian officials, the ship’s captain ended up taking the ship back to Germany, and over 250 passengers perished in the Holocaust.
“A shameful piece of World War II history is recounted firsthand,” the Hollywood Reporter wrote in a review of the award-winning film, which is based on actual footage and interviews with survivors. Registrants can see the film starting on July 17, then have the opportunity to ask questions at the July 25 panel.
