The criminal justice system is rife with racial bias, leading to a miscarriage of justice ranging from unjustified police violence and brutality to presumption of guilt and wrongful convictions. Criminal injustice in America will be the topic of a panel discussion at the Leventhal-Sidman Center in Newton.
In the post-Ferguson era, we examine the role that race plays in the criminal justice system from policing to prosecuting. Through our lens of truth and responsibility, our esteemed panel will explore racial inequities throughout the legal system.
Jelani Cobb, Moderator
As an award-winning staff writer at The New Yorker, Jelani Cobb writes about the enormous complexity of race in America. His series of articles about race, the police, and injustice demonstrate how the events in Ferguson, Missouri, were “not an aberration, but a microcosm of race relations in the United States.” Mr. Cobb teaches in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Benjamin Crump, Panelist
Recognized for his legal prowess and advocacy in the Trayvon Martin case and the Robbie Tolan U.S. Supreme Court case, American civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump protects the legal rights of our nation’s most frequently marginalized people. A recipient of the NAACP Thurgood Marshall Award, Mr. Crump became the 73rd president of the National Bar Association in 2015.
Anthony Ray Hinton, Panelist
Anthony Ray Hinton, death row exoneree, will share his story of wrongful conviction, survival on Alabama’s death row, and decades-long journey to exoneration and freedom. Convicted by an all-white jury of the unsolved murders of two fast-food restaurant managers, Mr. Hinton was sentenced to death based on testimony by state ballistics experts that went unchallenged in court. Now free after 30 years, Mr. Hinton advocates for changes that need to be made to prevent these types of injustices from happening to other innocent people.
Ronal Serpas, Panelist
Recently retired from a 34-year career in American law enforcement, Ronal W. Serpas, Ph.D., is a professor of practice, criminology and justice at Loyola University New Orleans. Dr. Serpas was a successful change agent implementing organizational wide transformation, advancing community policing and implementing justice and legitimacy principles in the delivery of police service.
