With the generous support of CJP and Repair the World, Jookender is organizing an emergency food drive this weekend to assist Russian-speaking seniors who have been deeply impacted by recent SNAP cuts.

There’s a common belief that Russian-speaking seniors can easily manage a month without food assistance because they’re used to storing canned goods and supplies. Unfortunately, that’s not always true — especially for those who now live alone after downsizing or losing a partner. Many tried to clear out their pantries when moving to smaller apartments, and now, without food support, face real hardship.

We often assume that children will step in to help, but sometimes they live far away, and many seniors hesitate to ask, insisting they’re fine — even when they’re not. Others who worked their whole lives in modest jobs and relied on food assistance now find themselves with almost nothing this November. Food might seem like a small thing — but for many, it’s what keeps them healthy, hopeful, and connected.

Please consider joining our effort by bringing non-perishable food (items that can last without refrigeration for at least a week) to our food drive this weekend.

This event also serves as a service-learning day for high schoolers — an opportunity to take meaningful action while reflecting on food insecurity and the Jewish value of tzedek (justice). Volunteers can earn up to 10 community service hours collecting and sorting donations, wrapping and packing food, and assisting with distribution.
