When Alexander the Great and his Macedonian army conquered the Persian Empire, they incorporated millions of people into their empire and began a process, Hellenization, that fundamentally altered the cultural landscape in a region that stretched from the Mediterranean to Afghanistan. Judaea was not immune from this dynamic process and became fully immersed in the Hellenistic world.

By focusing on the early generations of the Hasmonean (Maccabees) family, we can see how this process evolved and how it shaped the identities of every Judaean.
