JP Flicks Presents “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem”

November 19, 2016 Boston $5.00
Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem

This 2014 Israeli-French film tells of the marriage of Viviane Amsalem, chronicling the difficulties of her efforts to receive a gett, the divorce decree that permits a former wife to marry again. The plight of the agunah, the “abandoned wife,” is a frequent subject of Hebrew literature and poses significant ethical issues at the heart of Jewish life and lore. The film was selected as the Israeli entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 72nd Golden Globe awards.

Introduction and discussion by Prof. Joel Rosenberg, noted scholar of Jewish literature at Tufts University.
