Weaver Josh Kurtz and mosaic artist Mia Schon are two accomplished Boston-based artists who are developing their Jewish art through the 2025-2026 CJP x Vilna Community Creative Fellowship. Now, they are collaborating for the first time on an exhibit that explores the many ways in which we can use the most basic physical materials to physically and conceptually repair and mend, all while reimagining Jewish ritual for today.
Join us at Mayyim Hayyim for an inspiring evening of art, storytelling, and community with Josh and Mia at our exhibit opening. Come experience the exhibition, meet the artists, and be part of a meaningful conversation about creativity, memory, and community.
Josh Kurtz is a weaver, educator, and storyteller based in Somerville. He has worked as a teacher and community organizer in Washington, D.C., Romania, and Boston. He is the co-founder of the Jewish Craft School, which is dedicated to preserving and sharing Jewish artistic traditions. His writing has been featured in the Smithsonian Folklife Magazine, the Colorado Review, and several other publications. He holds an MDiv from Harvard Divinity School, where he studied Judaism, grief, and ethics.
Mia Schon is a visual artist and mosaicist with Boston and Tel Aviv roots. She transforms broken shards into luminous works of art that tell intergenerational stories. Through her practice, Mia crafts visual narratives that highlight resilience and continuity. Her fellowship project will explore how mosaic can serve as a metaphor for Jewish community: taking fragments of history and experience to build something whole, vibrant, and enduring.
