Jean Renoir’s masterful classic film “The Rules of the Game” (1939) portrays a weekend at an aristocratic country estate, where some heedless and giddy aristocrats go hunting and engage in mutual amorous infidelities. The owner of the estate is a Jew (once named Rosenthal) who had bought his way into the French aristocracy.

It’s one of the most perfect films ever made, and perhaps the most penetrating in its understanding of the troubles brewing on the dark horizon in 1939 France, Europe and the wider world.

With introduction and discussion by Dr. Joel Rosenberg, professor of Jewish Studies at Tufts University.
