“Making a Difference: The Gospel of John and the Parting of the Ways ” with Adele Reinhartz

February 1, 2016 Boston

The Gospel of John provides crucial evidence for the “parting of the ways” between Judaism and Christianity. Many New Testament scholars, following J. Louis Martyn, argue that the Gospel narrates — if obliquely — the expulsion of Jewish Christians from the synagogue. Professor Adele Reinhartz will argue that the Gospel does not reflect a past “parting” but seeks to create a future separation – by persuading its readers to form a cohesive community and distance themselves from Jewish non-believers.
