About Our Speaker
Ari Shavit is a leading Israeli columnist and writer and is considered one of the most influential journalists writing about the Middle East today. Born in Rehovot, Israel, Shavit served as a paratrooper in the IDF and studied philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jersualem. He began writing professionally in the 1980s for the progressive weekly Koteret Reishit and served as chairperson of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. In 1995 he joined Ha’aretz where we writes a column and serves on the editorial board. His recent book My Promised Land – The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel is a New York Times bestseller and has been lauded by critics across the political spectrum. In winning the inaugural Natan Book Award judges called Shavit’s book “the most important work about Israel written by an Israeli in recent years”.
