A 2020 Pew Research Center survey finds that many Jewish Americans participate, at least occasionally, both in some traditional religious practices, like going to a synagogue or fasting on Yom Kippur, and in some Jewish cultural activities, like making potato latkes, watching Israeli movies or reading Jewish news online. Among young Jewish adults, however, two sharply divergent expressions of Jewishness appear to be gaining ground, one involving religion deeply enmeshed in every aspect of life, and the other involving little or no religion at all. Leonard Saxe is a social psychologist and Klutznick Professor of Contemporary Jewish Studies and Social Policy at Brandeis University. His current work focuses on the socio-demography of American Jewry, religious identity and issues of antisemitism, engagement with Israel and relationships among members of diverse religious and ethnic groups. He was a Science Fellow for the U.S. Congress and a Fulbright Professor at Haifa University. He received the American Psychological Association’s award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest and the Association for the Scientific Study of Jewry’s Sklare Award for his career contributions to the understanding of Jewish life.
