Risky Work – Discussion with Three Front Line Journalists

April 7, 2015 Newton $15.00 - $18.00

Journalists face extraordinary peril to report on the prevailing issues of the day. Facing a global attack on their livelihoods – and sometimes their very lives – journalists are forced to reassess the risks they take in order to report the news. Yet, there is no lens to replace human observation and first-person reporting. What challenges journalists face and how investigative reporting can survive in these dangerous times is the topic of a talk at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:30pm.

Three panelists participating in the discussion are veterans of reporting from the front lines: Joe Bergantino, executive director/co-founder of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting and former investigative reporter with WBZ-TV; Amir Tibon, an Israeli journalist known for his coverage of the civil war in Syria; and Tracey Shelton, an Australian multimedia journalist and senior foreign correspondent for the Boston-based international news group GlobalPost whose stories have appeared on CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera. Moderating the talk is Aaron Schachter (pictured), assignment editor for Public Radio International. Charles M. Sennott, co-founder of GlobalPost, will provide opening remarks via Skype from Afghanistan.

Journalists in Jeopardy – Risking It All to Get the Story is part of the Jonathan Samen Hot Buttons, Cool Conversations Discussion Series at the JCC – a program of the Ryna Greenbaum JCC Center for the Arts. Tickets are $18. Contact 617-965-5226, boxoffice@jccgb.org or visit www.bostonjcc.org/hotbuttons.
