Join us for the opening reception of our brand new exhibit, Seek and Find.

Joel Moskowitz and Karen Weinhaus seek and find beauty in the material world that surrounds them, uncovering hidden messages in old library index cards, creating sculpture out of newsprint and making paintings with needle, thread, and felting.

More about the artists:

JOEL MOSKOWITZ has worked in a variety of media and numerous styles, with text—letters and numbers—a common thread. A gift of discarded library catalog cards from an elementary school inspired him to combine his love of words with his love of pictures. He searched for “hidden phrases” and illustrated them with ink and acrylic, beads, thread, buttons, and images cut from discarded books. A graduate of Brandeis University, his work has been featured in several juried group exhibitions, including the Cambridge Art Association, the Danforth Art Museum, and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts. He is a core member of Fountain Street Gallery and lives in Maynard.

After a successful career as a children’s book illustrator, KAREN WEINHAUS began to work with papier-mache and, more recently, fabric. “My mother and grandmother taught me to sew at an early age. In fact, I’ve been sewing as long as I’ve been drawing.” During her husband’s cancer treatment, she started sewing on quilt batting, a material that usually serves only to hold the quilt together and is never seen, finding it “a good metaphor for hidden strengths that held me together at the time.” A graduate of the Boston Museum School and Pratt Institute, her work has been exhibited at the Cambridge Art Association, the Boston Museum School, and New Art Center, Newton. She lives in Watertown.
