Renowned klezmer band Shirim performs a concert of soulful and exuberant Eastern Europe klezmer music at the Waldorf School of Lexington.

Powerful proponents of traditional klezmer, the band is also known for its groundbreaking compositions that have expanded the klezmer vocabulary and ingenious klezmer arrangements of music from the classical repertoire.

Their klezmer “The Nutcracker,” based on Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet suite, and “Pincus and the Pig,” a collaboration with Maurice Sendak, a klezmer rewrite of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” have both been featured at concerts across North America and Europe, while their original compositions have been recorded and performed by bands in the U.S. and Europe.

The band has performed concerts with The Philly Pops, Maurice Sendak (narrating “Pincus”) and NPR’s Ellen Kushner, played on the soundtrack of a Woody Allen movie (“Deconstructing Harry”), performed from Los Angeles to Montreal to Turin, Italy, to a bowling alley in Southern New Hampshire, and played for hundreds of weddings and bar mitzvahs. Shirim has released seven recordings on the Northeastern, Rykodisc, Newport Classic and Tzadik labels.

The band is led by clarinetist Glenn Dickson and will be performing in Lexington with Michael McLaughlin on accordion, Jim Gray on tuba and Eric Rosenthal on drums.

Tickets available in advance and at the door.
