Join us for a talk with Rachel Kadish, author of “The Weight of Ink,” winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award. Anita Diamant will introduce the afternoon’s discussion on the impact of history and gender on Jewish culture.
Rachel’s talk will draw from her experience writing “The Weight of Ink.” Whether or not you’ve read the book, her talk will inspire you to think about fascinating topics, including:
- What it means to work as an American Jewish writer in the current political climate
- The process of writing historical fiction
- The roles of gender and philosophy in religion and history
- The relationship between Jewish culture and secular society
Set in London in the 1660s and the early 21st century, “The Weight of Ink” is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city, and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. “The Weight of Ink” is a sophisticated work of historical fiction about women separated by centuries, and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order to reconcile the life of the heart and mind.
Tea and snacks typical of the era and countries featured in the book will be served. Copies of “The Weight of Ink” will be available for sale at the event, by cash or check only. Childcare is available if you preregister.
