“The Children of Chabannes” (Promotional still)

Join Boston Jewish Film for a special Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, screening of the Emmy Award-winning film “The Children of Chabannes.”

In the spirit of Louis Malle’s “Au Revoir Les Enfants” and Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List,” “The Children of Chabannes” is the story of how the people in the tiny French village of Chabannes chose action over indifference and risked their lives and livelihoods to save more than 400 Jewish refugee children during World War Il. Filmmaker Lisa Gossels’s father, Peter, and uncle Werner were two of these rescued children. Integral to the Chabannes story is the extraordinary measures taken by the local teachers and townspeople who sheltered, nurtured, educated and integrated the children into the community until it was no longer safe for them to be there.

The screening is followed by a discussion with filmmakers Dean Wetherell and Lisa Gossels, Boston Jewish Film’s new artistic director; Werner Gossels, Lisa’s uncle and child of Chabannes; and moderated by Ken Shulman, BJF’s board president.

Don’t miss this special screening! Complimentary popcorn, drinks and a post-film gathering are included with the purchase of a ticket.
