We are thrilled to welcome Toronto-based architectural photographer David Kaufman for a conversation about his photographs of Poland and western Ukraine. These inspiring, moving photos portray the remnants of Jewish life that remain following the destruction of local Jewish communities under the Nazis and in the Soviet era.

Kaufman’s large-scale, highly-detailed images of synagogues and cemeteries, architecture and streetscapes, are a testament to the rich, varied lives led by Jews in cities and towns over centuries and a reminder of the challenges in preserving Jewish material culture in countries that have few Jews today and meager resources.

Post-pandemic, we will host David’s photographs in the Vilna’s newly restored art gallery.
