Join us to learn from experts in the field about a variety of topics related to parenting a special needs child or young adult during the pandemic and beyond. Each week will feature a different speaker who will give a presentation over Zoom, with time for questions at the end. 

June 24: “Coping With the Loss of Summer Camp” by Rachel Barbanel-Fried, Ph.D.

Dr. Rachel Barbanel-Fried, aka Dr. RBF, is a clinical psychologist, writer and optimal performance consultant based in Newton. She works with individuals, couples and families in a therapeutic setting who are looking to move forward toward growth, change and healing. Dr. RBF utilizes an evidence-based, collaborative approach. She’s direct, down-to-earth and non-judgmental, specializing in working with people from diverse backgrounds.

July 8: “Guardianship and Special Needs Trusts: What You Need to Know and What You Can Do Right Now” by Ken Shulman

Ken Shulman assists individuals and families with estate planning and related issues for elders and families with disabled children. He frequently represents clients in guardianship matters and serves as a trustee for families.

July 22: “Who Will Handle the Day-to-Day When I Can’t?” by Sara Freedman, MSW

Sara Freedman, MSW, joined JF&CS in 2006 as an intern in the CHAI Works day program. Throughout her time at JF&CS, she has held numerous jobs in CHAI Services, including job coach, residential support specialist, director of community programs and associate division director. Sara’s passion for supporting individuals with disabilities and their families has motivated her to help launch new programs in CHAI Services, as well as expand and grow existing programs. Sara has a bachelor’s degree in human development and psychology from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in social work from Boston College. 

Aug. 5: “Transition 101” by Leo Rotman, CFP 

Leo Rotman, CFP, has been working in the financial services field since 2001. He received a B.S. in economics and finance from Bentley University and later became a certified financial planner. He focuses on working with families to give them peace of mind about their future and in particular enjoys working with folks who have a special needs loved one.
