Join us for our 2020 Gala Concert with celebrated pianist Garrick Ohlsson, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and renowned artists and speakers around the world for an evening of music that defied the Nazis, plus Beethoven, jazz, gospel and more, including the world premiere of a new Terezin Music Foundation commission.

Our concert is titled “I Am Thinking of When We Will Meet Again,” a line from the lyrics to “A Sleepless Night,” composed in Terezín by Pavel Haas in 1944. We’ll hear that stirring work and others chosen “to heal separation and loss,” including Viktor Ullmann’s arrangement of “Elihau HaNavi” (Terezín 1933) and Erwin Schulhoff’s modern, jazzy “Hot-Sonate” (Prague 1930).

Garrick Ohlsson offers a stunning performance of Beethoven’s “Appassionata” sonata, a work, he says, that is “full of loss and rage and passion.” Additional performing artists include tenor Francis Rogers, saxophonist Philipp Stäudlin, pianist Yoko Hagino, Coro Allegro (Boston’s acclaimed LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus), The Boston Community Gospel Choir and members of the Brookline High School Camerata Chorus.

Our world premiere is a new TMF commission, “In Search of Home,” a setting of a beloved Rumi poem by rising composer Milad Yousufi. We will also hear compelling words from Dr. Anna Ornstein, Auschwitz survivor, scholar and educator. Khizr Khan and Norman Eisen join us as well.
