The biblical story of Jonah, who was swallowed by a big fish, is told every year during the High Holidays. This year, children ages 5 and up and their families are invited to a special hands-on program featuring a life-sized inflatable humpback whale (Nile) for a morning of Jewish holiday traditions combined with environmental experiences.

Children will meet Nile and get to sit inside him, much like Jonah did. They will learn the anatomy of the whale, its unique traits and abilities, and how we can help with conservation issues. The program will incorporate Jewish texts and show how the story of Jonah relates to Jewish traditions.

This is the kind of innovative programming that is a hallmark of Binah B’emet, Temple Emeth’s student-centered educational program for students in pre-K through grade 7. At Binah B’emet, the material is made relevant and connected to the students’ lives. The focus is on creating connections between people, between people and the environment, and between Jewish values and the contemporary world.

Parents interested in Binah B’emet for their children and in Temple Emeth as their spiritual home are invited to an open house that will be part of the Sept. 10 program. Meet the clergy and staff and learn more about the synagogue and the school.
