Ma’ayan invites the entire community to Ma’ayan’s Annual Elul Lecture at 12:30 p.m., preceded by a light lunch at noon.
Raizi Chechik will teach “Ink and Courage: The Untold Story of the Woman Behind the Vilna Shas,” sponsored by Shari and David Katz and Bob Morgan on the occasion of the 10th yahrtzeit of Lois Morgan.
Her name is little-known, yet her work reshaped the Jewish world. In 19th-century Vilna, Devorah Romm, a single mother of six, stepped into the male-dominated world of printing to complete her late husband’s legacy. She went on to publish the Vilna Shas, the edition of the Talmud that became a global standard. This lecture blends the broader history of Talmudic printing with newly discovered archival treasures, uncovering the extraordinary story of the woman who left an indelible mark on Jewish learning, and providing inspiration as we approach Rosh Hashanah.
Raizi Chechik is an award-winning educator with over 20 years’ experience, most recently as Head of School at Manhattan Day School. She lectures internationally on Jewish texts, history, and education, and serves as Community Scholar at the Jewish Center of Manhattan and fellow at YU’s Center for Israel Studies, completing a Ph.D. on Lithuanian Jewish educational history.
